Leroy Merritt, the founder of Merritt Properties, is known for his trust-based approach to business, a straightforward style that closed deals with a handshake. Born in 1930, Leroy was raised in a blue-collar area where he worked in his parents’ restaurant, learning the importance of working hard and taking care of customers. His aspirations and entrepreneurial spirit led to his first business venture of selling hotdogs and sandwiches in the dorms at Western Maryland College. During summers, he worked for his uncles in construction. Leroy established Merritt Properties in 1967, growing it into a prominent business across Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. His philosophy and deep commitment to fair and honest business practices shaped the culture of his company, which still resonates today. Leroy fostered a family-like atmosphere and valued strong relationships among employees and clients, supporting long-term partnerships with a sense of dedication to service and integrity.

Leroy dedicated much of his life to supporting and helping others. Through this scholarship, we strive to continue his mission of empowering future generations by providing assistance to deserving students who demonstrate GRIT, leadership potential, and a passion for supporting others.
