Executive Functions

Executive functions is explicit and embedded every day in GA. We intentionally support each student’s unique strengths and learning to address inner and outer organizations, make effective attention decisions, learn about flexibility, and support goal setting. We take the time to teach our students about the concept of time and time management.

Structured Literacy (Orton Gillingham Tutoring)

Orton Gillingham is a multi-sensory, explicit, sequential, systematic, cumulative approach to literacy intervention. Many struggling readers come to Glenwood Academy with anxiety and self-doubt about reading. We know that stressed brains can’t learn! We help each student establish a positive relationship with literacy by creating trusting environments that celebrate individuality and perseverance!

Multisensory Math

At Glenwood Academy, we take pride in customizing instruction that accelerates the development of each mathematician. Incorporating manipulatives and movements helps our students to understand numeracy concepts and mathematical vocabulary.

Humanities

At Glenwood Academy, we integrate reading, writing, social studies, and the arts through a Humanities approach. Our lower and middle school students are immersed in learning about ancient civilizations, pivotal points in world history, and relevant content. Building background knowledge supports reading comprehension, vocabulary, and makes writing an easier and more enjoyable experience.

True GRIT

Here in GA, we provide explicit and embedded instruction to develop social-emotional learning skills. Through intentional support and a nurturing environment, we empower students to become aware of and responsible for their choices and impact. Our GA True GRIT comprehensive approach addresses the unique growth journey for each student.

We strongly believe that the positive relationships with our students is what makes our community so special. We are proud to be champions for every student at GA. We don’t give up, we lean in to help. We collaborate on solutions that make sense. We personally invest in the person. We don’t make judgments on a student or a family, we support and empower. We don’t make excuses, we make a difference.

College, Career, and Community Pathways

Glenwood Academy supports a comprehensive approach aimed at early exposure to self and career exploration in the ever-changing global economy. Creating real world relevance and empowering students to become responsible in their learning pathways to their future selves maximizes investment in their educational experience. The exposure and practice each student gains to different careers helps them to embrace a path where their strengths, talents, and values are needed in future careers.

We respect each student’s dreams and desires for their future. Students gain necessary career skills by leading and managing the popular GA Cafe. They are able to explore their interests in various career and college pathways through dual enrollment classes at Howard Community College. Our seniors benefit from hands-on training and experience in off-site internships that match their personal strengths and interests.
